Important Things to Know About Stromectol Ivermectin Treatment
Generic Stromectol Ivermectin is a combination containing at least 90% 5-Odemethyl- 22,23-dihydroavermectin A 1a and less than 10% 5-O-demethyl-25-de(1-methylpropyl)-22,23-dihydro-25-(1-methylethyl)avermectin A 1a , generally referred to as 22,23-dihydroavermectin B 1a and B 1b , or H 2 B 1a and H 2 B 1b , respectively. The respective empirical formulas are C 48 H 74 O 14 and C 47 H 72 O 14 , with molecular weights of 875.10 and 861.07, respectively.
Indication
Generic Stromectol Ivermectin is applied for the treatment of intestinal (i.e., nondisseminated) and a certain type of diarrhea (strongyloidiasis) caused by the nematode parasite Strongyloides stercoralis . It also treats onchocerciasis (river blindness) due to the nematode parasite Onchocerca volvulus . Moreover it can be used to treat scabies caused by Sarcoptes scabiei .
Mechanism of Action
Generic Stromectol Ivermectin binds selectively and with high affinity to glutamate-gated chloride ion channels in invertebrate muscle and nerve cells of the microfilaria. This binding enhances the permeability of the cell membrane to chloride ions and causes hyperpolarization of the cell, resulting in paralysis and death of the parasite. Generic Stromectol Ivermectin also performs as an agonist of the neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), thus upsetting GABA-mediated central nervous system (CNS) neurosynaptic transmission. It may also harm normal intrauterine development of O. volvulus microfilariae and may restrain their release from the uteri of gravid female worms.
How Supplied
Tablets of Stromectol 3 mg are white, round, flat, bevel-edged tablets coded MSD on one side and 32 on the other side. They are supplied as NDC 0006-0032-20 unit dose packages of 20.
Stromectol Side Effects
• Redness, blistering, peeling or loosening of the skin
• Skin rash, hives or increased itching
• Yellowing of eyes or skin
• Unusual weakness or tiredness
• Difficulty breathing
• Eye or eyelid pain, irritation, redness or swelling
• Loss or change of vision
Warnings
In patients with onchocerciasis, microfilaricidal drugs, such as diethylcarbamazine citrate (DEC-C), may result in cutaneous and/or systemic reactions of varying severity (the Mazzotti reaction) and ophthalmological reactions. These reactions are most likely caused by allergic and inflammatory responses to the death of microfilariae. Patients treated with Generic Stromectol Ivermectin for onchocerciasis may observe these reactions besides clinical adverse reactions related to the drug itself.
The treatment of severe Mazzotti reactions has not been clinically conducted. For treatment of postural hypotension, oral hydration, recumbency, intravenous normal saline, and/or parenteral corticosteroids have been applied. Antihistamines and/or aspirin have been used for most mild to severe cases.
Contraindications
Generic Stromectol Ivermectin is contraindicated in patients who are hypersensitive to any factor of this product.
Storage
Store at room temperature below 86 degrees F (30 degrees C) away from light and moisture.
Special Notes
Before taking Generic Stromectol Ivermectin, tell your doctor about any other medical conditions if you have mainly liver disease. Your doctor may also recommend a corticosteroid (a cortisone-like medicine) for certain patients with river blindness, especially those with serious symptoms. It can reduce the tenderness caused by the death of the worms. If your doctor prescribes these two medicines together, take the corticosteroid along with Generic Stromectol Ivermectin. Take them exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not miss any doses.
